This Dundonian Duo has taken 2020 by storm and they continue to release excellent single after single. This year we have been privileged to hear 'EP.1' which has diversity, emotion, nu-disco, nostalgic disco, electronic power and contemporary flare. It is a five track E.P. that must be on you 'listen to' song list and if you have any slight interest in electronic, synth or synth pop then Beta Waves must be on your playlist. Throughout the 'lockdown' period in the United Kingdom, the boys from Fife released singles from this E.P. one month at a time and August saw them release a brand new remix of 'Orange Sea', which is not only excellent, but also demonstrates even more diversity in their Beta skill level. Here at Advosound, we can only say we are huge fans and are always excited to hear a new single is going to drop. As we have been away from the Social media side of things recently we have not had a chance to review their latest work. Instead, we have decided to put together this page for you to explore The Beta Waves, their work, style and discover how they are shaping electronic music in Scotland. These guys are truly one of Scotland's hottest prospects and they have huge things in their future.

Review of I Had You Wrong:
It is not often you say ‘I had You wrong’ and think this is one of the best things to a happen in a month. We have no issue with saying that when it comes to the Beta Waves new single.Last month Beta Waves took everyone on a musical journey of tranquility and feeling with ‘UDH2′. This month the Dundonian Duo hit back with more tempo, synth harmonics and a fresh new sound that for us all to enjoy. ‘I had You Wrong’ is the latest of several singles to be released by a group that is shaping the electronic landscape in Scottish music and we got the chance to review it!
This new single has several dimensions and Beta Waves have really showcased diversity and their excellent skills in electronic music production. The diversity can be found in the multiple electrical genres the song explores. First, the listener is greeted with guitars, synths and an upbeat tempo, all with a rocky nu-disco vibe (we think there might also a hint of 90s nostalgia hidden in this vibe too). Next, the Dundonians narrate a story where you realise someone’s feelings are different from what you thought and, ultimately, come to terms with this. This narration, much like the initial rocky nu-disco vibe does not, however, last. From around 2 minutes and 10 seconds, Beta Waves starts pleasuring their listeners with a beat heavy breakdown, excellent looping vocals and synth lines that would put 80s synth tunes to shame. This instrumental section lasts until the end of the song and takes a very contemporary electronic approach; focusing on the synth and the sounds and emotions it can create.
This song has true has diverse characteristics, as can been seen from a quick overview above. The duo have mixed these characteristics together seamlessly into one collage of electric noise. The production quality of this track enables this seamless transition. The use of contrasting levels, digital modulation and perfect sample placement to enable to the entire track to flow. These aspects coupled with headroom space allow the entire piece to feel complete and give any listener an amazing experience.
While we have focused on the diversity and production value here, it is unfair to say that this song does not offer more. This single offers so much and Beta Waves have created something truly unique. Once again they are pushing the boundaries of the electronic scene. We enjoyed listening to this and recommend you try this, as well as all their other recent releases. Beta Waves may say ‘I Had You Wrong’ but we don’t think we are wrong when we say this single is a masterclass of contemporary electronic music.
Review of UDH2:
First we had ‘Hideaway’ and now we are blessed with ‘U Don’t Have 2′!In the space of a month the Dundonian electro pop duo have hit the airwaves with two brand new single, and the latest one is destined for the top of your playlist. The new single ‘U Don’t Have 2′ (or ‘UDH2′) is released on the 8th May and it takes a step away from the duo’s previous work, dipping into a new electronic style, where feeling, harmony and tranquility are the focus.
Beta Waves’ music has characteristically had an upbeat and energetic feel to it. This single stays true to the those characteristics but there exists a new combination of synth tones, a slightly quieter beat and effervescent vocals not heard in their previous work. In this guise, the band are exploring a new electronic style, but this track offers so much more than a just a new style.
The track transports you to a place, a musical vacuum if you will, where only musical ecstasy, nuances and relaxation are important; a place devoid of thoughts, that you will want to go ‘On and on and on’ as the Duo tells us. While this is not a physical space, we challenge you to listen to this track, and not become absorbed by its dynamic harmonies, formed from excellent vocal work and perfectly timed compositions, and relaxing sounds. You will find yourself in the musical vacuum we described, experiencing only the sounds Beta Waves have created, relaxing and thinking very little. Feeling and harmony are key to this track and they are elements the Dundonians have used expertly.
Furthermore, ‘U Don’t have 2′ holds the ability to be played in both a quiet place and in a stadium, but we believe the enjoyment of the song is very personal in either scenario. Other songs such as ‘Hideaway’ provide incentives to dance and move, while utilising both energy from the song and the listeners to create an atmosphere. ‘U Don’t Have 2′ creates its own a unique energy that encourages you to simply enjoy. This enjoyment can be in the form of dance, but you will be dancing in their musical vacuum. In our view, this makes the song tranquil, in the sense that it evokes comfort and peacefulness (things that are usually experienced on a personal level). You are not entirely alone though, as Beta Waves do guide you through the song, but it is you who feels the benefit.
‘U Don’t Have 2′ is to be enjoyed and experienced and we have to say Beta Waves have only gone and produced another excellent tune. They are driving the electro-pop industry forward and doing so in amazing ways. If there is anything you do on 8th May (or afterwards), it should be to check out this track and enjoy the journey that Beta Waves have created.
